Kristian War The Searcher Series Volume 1 Peter Wisan 9781548504977 Books Reviews
Wow! I am actually quite surprised by this book. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started it.
Kristian's War is very unique. Think Pilgrim's Progress retelling set in present\future time, where evil takes the form of men, and weapons and tactics are necessary to fight them. Kristian is on a journey to the King, and he must fight Past, Shame, Condemnation, and more on the way, with help from Evan(gelist) and others.
I was somewhat confused as to *why* Kristian decided to make the journey, and what his past was, but about 3\4s of the way through when all that is revealed, it makes so much sense. And talk about a heartbreaking backstory! Wow! There may have been some tears. My main critique would be that it would have been better to share Kristian's backstory, or parts of it, sooner. It would have really helped to grab the reader's attention sooner, and cause less confusion in their minds. That and a few typos\grammatical errors made me dock a star.
This is a profound, unique and fascinating twist on the classic, Pilgrim's Progress. I would definitely recommend checking it out!
Recommended for ages 15+ for mild violence, and somewhat disturbing themes such as abortion.
This was an amazingly fast read for me, probably done within 8 hours ...
I found it easy to read, though a few of the gun terms had me visiting some sites for a more in-depth understanding of what they meant.
When it came to the characters, their names gave away what they meant to the plot line and main character - it is probably the only thing I'd ask the author to put more thought into for the next book in the series...
Faith can be a very tough struggle, as well as a very long journey - and relating it to terms of warfare simplified it immensely - and not in a bad way. There was one instance that I found quite lacking though - and that was the confrontation/interaction between Kristian and Condemnation ... Yes, some things an be struck down easily, quickly and forever, but there are sometimes when it shouldn't be summed up in a few sentances and snatches of dialogue.
There are some characters I couldn't get enough of, and I hope they are visited in future books Sage and Christi... Katy's story would be a good one too.
Kristian lives with his estranged and injured wife, Christi. Christi is in wheelchair, is very bitter and blames Kristian for her condition. The society they live in is restrictive and evil. A neighbor, John Dappler, who is always looking at a new health fad runs, through his farm and hands Kristian a wrapped book that he must hide. John is captured by Sergeant Major Shame and sentenced to death.
Shortly after the execution, an imposing stranger approaches Kris and offers to show him how to reach a distant King who can bring peace and love back to his live. Although it is forbidden to go beyond their home territory, Kristian decides to take the risk to make the dangerous journey to find the King. Evan tells Kristian that he will meet up with him soon, but that Kristian must stay on the straight path even when things or people try to knock him off.
Kristian sets off from Comfort County to the Land of Genuine Experience with a friend who does not last. Along the way, Kristian comes upon forks in the road and faces obstacles such as Discourage, Staff Sergeant Past and others. He also gets help from Grace, Pastor and his daughters, Hope and Faith. The journey is full of danger as Staff Sergeant Past pursues him relentlessly.
While Kristian struggles along his journey the author shares manipulation that is influencing his wife Christi at home. About 75% in the author reveals the events that crippled Christi.
As I began to recognize the allegory this story made me think of Pilgrim’s Progress. Here there is a realistic military force and battle that Kristian must escape. The story line and action moved the story along at a quick pace. I found this entertaining and I found myself shaking my head and smiling at different stages. I recommend this to readers who would enjoy a Biblical allegory.
I received this title from the author through a Goodreads ARC group.
This book is 60% "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan, 30% "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis and 10% military terminology. The author has modernized Pilgrim's Progress and added an outlook at the bad guy's perspective. Instead of ye old times, the main traveler is in a dystopian, military controlled future. During Kristian's journey to the King, he encounters people who help him stumble or try to divert him. Then you have the military baddies who are hunting him to stop him from ending his journey to the King.
While I see what the author is trying to do, updating Pilgrim's Progress to a modern era I don't think the book is long enough to open up the world to as much detail as it needs. The very beginning of the book was very difficult to try and grasp what was going on. It wasn't until Kristian is really into his journey that I was understanding what was going on. I wish the author would have diverted more in the travel as it would have been interesting to see modern takes on different temptations and stumbling sins. I'm also not sure the use of military themes is the best here. They are very jarring and not well integrated into the story. They are shoehorned in because the author is familiar with the lingo and the military.
It's really hard to improve on such a well loved and time honored classic. Seeing as this is book one in a series, that might lend to a richer story. Final Grade - D
An imaginative take on the hero's journey combining faith and military experience. Kristian must free himself from his past to find the King, and to do it he must win a brutal war.
