Diners Dives Dead Ends A Rose Strickland Mystery Volume 1 Terri Austin 9781938383007 Books

I really liked this book. Rose was born into a wealthy family, however due to her desire to blaze her own trail and not follow the path her parents, mainly her mother, laid out for her, she was stripped of her access to the family money and found herself turned out. She is now working as a waitress.

In this book, one of Rose's best friends, Axton Graystone, asks her to watch his backpack. Shortly after this he goes missing. The police refuse to take it seriously, therefore Rose decides it's up to her to find him.

Rose has no detective experience, however she is willing to find people and ask them some tough questions. She also has some surprising connections she can make.

And as I am a huge fan of the romance variety, there are a couple of perspective individuals in this book. There is Dane Harker, an attorney that Rose went to elementary school with whom she hasn't seen since elementary school. There there is also this mystery man with gold eyes who seems rather shady.

This is an excellent book. I can't say that I have much experience with mystery novels, so I don't know how well this book falls into that category, but it's a fun adventure. Romance is definitely not the main focus in this book, but it's still there and it's good. My only issue with this is that sometimes I feel Rose gets ahead of herself and it lucky no one kills her.

I inhaled this book trying to figure out what was going to happen next.

... you know you've found a winner! Terri L. Austin, my waistline thanks you for this fresh, funny mystery that had enough twists to keep me walking (and guessing) all the way to the breathless finale.

This first book in Austin's debut series introduces Rose, a mixed-up twentysomething who thinks her life as a waitress/student is pretty dull. Then her closest friend goes missing and her world is flipped on end by shady characters and startling revelations about some of her hometown's most prominent citizens.

With a colorful supporting cast that includes Rose's spunky, sassy boss (who says you can't have adventures after 70?), and plenty of men vying for our heroine's attention, this book definitely has something for everyone. Rose is smart and independent, and the contrast between her and her sister, who took the road her parents pointed her toward and lives a very comfortable life, adds a nice layer of family drama to the story.

Austin deftly sets Rose up as a "real" character who has refreshingly appropriate reactions to the crazy situation she's thrown into. I really liked that Rose didn't behave as though she knew she was the heroine in a thriller, but rather as most ordinary people would if they were thrust into such an extraordinary situation.

Witty dialogue and snappy writing keep the narrative moving right along, and I loved the fact that even when I thought I had it all figured out, there was one more surprise waiting that I really didn't see coming.

Bravo, Ms. Austin! I can't wait to see what kind of trouble Rose gets into next -- or which guy she chooses.
Diners, Dives and Dead Ends by Teri L. Austin is an awesome book that totally defies expectations and crosses genre lines. I bought this book/audio combination because it was on sale and because it is published by Henery Press, one of my favorite small mystery publishers. I was expecting a cozy mystery and in many ways this book lived up to the cozy mystery standards. There detective is female and an amateur sleuth. She has a group of close but quirky friends and family that help and hinder her by turns. And there's humor. Plenty of humor. But there's also a crime boss and meaty, muscled henchmen to carry out his orders. The police are not friendly or even sympathetic. So the books is a bit more hard-boiled than cozy in some respects. Also, the protagonist is a very young - by cozy mystery standards - twenty something waitress who is still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. She was a poor little rich girl who refused to go to her parents school of choice and got booted out of the house and cut off from financial support and has been making her own way ever since. So Diners, Dives and Dead Ends could very well appeal to fans of the budding genre of "New Adult" literature. And frankly it wouldn't take much of a stretch to get older teens hooked on the story either. There is some violence, references to sexual activity and drug use but nothing too graphic or too shocking for the average seventeen year old, in my opinion.

So you take all of that stuff and add in the fact that this book is really well written, funny and fast paced, with plenty of emotion and humor, lots of twists and turns and the hint of a shockingly unlikely romance and...well...what more could you want? I loved this book and can't wait to read the next one.
