Lasher has a lot going for it. Some spoilers in this review so beware! The sequel to "The Witching Hour" hits the ground running right after the cliffhanger ending of that previous novel. Lasher is in the flesh and is about as evil and horrible a being as there ever was, yet with a certain chilling innocence and candor. He is just as manipulative and ruthless as he was as a spirit, and it turns out he is actually a different species than human and he is hoping to repopulate the earth with his own kind.

We learn interesting things about the genetics of the Mayfair witches and Michael. We see Rowan, still conflicted as her heart is with Michael but she is fascinated by Lasher and what he is as well. There is a prophecy and a long flashback from Julien"s ghost so you know where the story is headed. Lasher gets a big flashback scene as well and we get to know his whole backstory. Lots of it is good old vintage gothic horror as only Anne Rice can write.

So why 3 stars? Well.... Anne Rice got a bit too into certain aspects of the story that made the overall experience of the novel fairly unpleasant. Rowan goes through a lot of abuse at the hands of Lasher that is painful to read. Rapes, miscarriages, being duct taped and left for days on an old mattress. Just awful. And senseless - Lasher needs Rowan to accomplish his goals and it is amazing she doesn't die before halfway through the novel. Rowan was a very interesting character in the first novel but is relegated to a helpless prisoner role that is overall a minor point in the story. Instead, the main female romantic lead is...... A little girl!

Remember Mona Mayfair from the first book? She always had a bow in her hair and was a flower girl at the wedding? The impression given was a 8-10 year old at most. It is revealed in this novel suddenly that she is 13 and is a precocious genius and a powerful witch as well as being beautiful and very voluptuous for her age. She actively seduces Michael while Rowan is away. She self proclaims that she had "eradicated" her own virginity and started experimenting with partners at the age of 8. She usually experiments with her relatives (since incest is de rigeur in these novels). Her inner and outer dialogue is super-annoying and filled with big words in a way that even a "genius" would almost never use and it doesn't seem authentic. just like showing off. The pedophile theme repeats itself multiple times in Julien's flashback.

Also Michael is supposed to be a "good" character!!! And though Mona really practically forces him into it is not pleasant to read about a 48 year old man having sex with a 13 year old girl in excruciating detail. Over and over again. At least it is pretty easy to skim over these parts of the story.

Also, though the end is heavily foreshadowed and makes sense within the book's universe, I kind of wish they didn't do what they did to Lasher. I mean he was one of a kind and it would have been believable if they opted to give him more of a chance. Oh well - In the end not a bad book altogether but the overall effect is a distasteful and unpleasant read due to the violence and pedophilic aspects of the book.

I read this on the 1990 s and loved it. It re-reading, I found it to be wordy, repetitive, and slow moving. The story is still interesting if you can survive the slow moving portions. There is no doubt in my mind that Anne Rice had issues with her Catholic background and with sexual identity and sin. She seems to be fixated on that as a theme.
Seriously. Who doesn't love witches. I love Anne Rice's books whether they are about Vampires or Witches as she is a terrific author.

The Mayfair Witch trilogy I have read several times over the years but did not have them on my . Only hardcover. Now I have both. I read all three books (Mayfair Witches, Lasher, and Taltos) back to back, and will read them again in a couple of years.

Incredible story line, terrific characters, and wonderful scene description. Rice makes you feel like you are on the street looking at the Mayfair yard and house or in the living room looking up the stairs. Simply wonderful!
I listened to the audio book. I had serious issues with Michael and Mona. I couldnt wrap my head around it. How the family did nothing and just took it like it was a natural thing. I do feel sometimes, Ms Rice goes into too much detail and you tend to block out the droning. Narrator is top notch and does an amazing job. If I could just get past the man and the child.
I'd give it 3.5 stars if possible. It's a satisfying sequel but a somewhat disappointing Rice novel. Overall it's a good book. I enjoyed the fact that it's split into 3 parts, including perspectives from Julien and Lasher. Some people complained about how raunchy the first book was and this one is a little more explicit, so if that bothers you then you might not enjoy this book.
This book is part of a Trilogy. Anne Rice has written few books that I have not enjoyed. Last fall I donated over 2,000 hard cover and 1,250+ soft covers to a nearby nursing home. The residents were elated. (In all honesty, it never occured that younger persons would be in a nursing home, but I met 15 that were recovering from accidents and it wasn't necessary for them to be in a hospital. I'm glad I found out this information because I have collected more from neighbors that were getting rid of their books. I don't believe in ever throwing a book away, and I'm happy to say that I never have.) Anne Rice was well recieved by the patients.
I should preface this by noting that I'm not the biggest fan of Anne Rice's work. I read The Witching Hour and was left if nothing else, wanting to know what happened next. After about 35% my desire to put the story away overrode my curiosity. I like the historic and macabre aspects of what I read but I just didn't dig where the story is going nor could I abide the aspects of a 40-something-year-old man having sex with a 13-year-old child which occurs on more than one occasion in the story.
This is the second book in the trilogy, Lives of the Mayfair Witches. The Witching Hour was quite frankly, bizarre; Lasher is extremely bizarre, beyond the outer limits of bizarre. Here we follow the lives of the hero, the heroine, the family, the familiar. Birth, sex, death, bondage, history, collide in a terrible kaleidoscope of seemingly fateful encounters. Are these fantastic events fate? Can the Witches choose a different fate? Or, make their own? Did I mention, Christian Blasphemy? Well, you decide. This entertainment is a self-destruct of emotion and thought. As usual, hail to the author. Good show!
