Ember Walsh is smart. She knows what she wants in life and she works hard to attain those goals. She's already graduated College and has moved to NYC...lands a top notch waitressing job at a plush, elite, five star restaurant while she pursues her dream goal of becoming a writer. And then she meets bad boy, Trace Montgomery and falls....hard.
Trace Montgomery is one damaged soul full of self loathing and hatred. He hates himself to such a degree that he's given up on lifes happiness. To cope with his damaged life and try to bury past abusive memories, he fights for money and screws any woman available - - and since women flock to his beautiful body like bees to honey, they're always available. He's attracted to Ember but feels completely undeserving of her. Long and short of it is, Trace is self destructive. He falls in love with Ember despite his best intentions to avoid it, but he feels his love of her is not in her best interest and deliberately hurts her emotionally to make her run.
It wasn't easy for me to like this story only because I hate to see a woman beg and grovel to the degree that Ember does. I know there's a reason for her groveling and those reasons are detrimental to the success of the plot. Still, it grinded my gears to see her grovel to a man who deliberately hurts her emotionally...even though he feels it's for her own good. But I persevered and I'm glad I did.
Ember loves and wants Trace so badly that she does just about anything...overlooks just about anything to have him...telling herself repeatedly "he's damaged...I can help him". And even though she's right (he IS messed up) she's portrayed as too intelligent to put herself through the hurt and hell she goes through - - especially when Trace doesn't want her help (he feels underserving after all).
I kept thinking "there comes a point where ya gotta say ENOUGH and cut your losses"...no matter how much you love a guy, right? No matter how much it hurts? But of course, the plot wouldn't succeed if Ember gave up on Trace. She sticks it out and continues to forgive and put up with his BS.
I was swept away with this story. Told in first person from Embers' POV, it was superb and told well with a deep tacit message. Yes, it has a few holes and unanswered questions...(but then again that could just me me getting lost in all the twists and turns). I felt it unraveled a few times but it never disintegrates. The Author get's it back on track smoothly. Lot's of mystery and intrigue. The balance of narrative and dialogue, I thought, was perfect. Sometimes facts are repeated and reiterated as if the Author might have forgotten she's stated that two/three times already...but then it just reinforces events past and present...at least for me.
All in all I enjoyed this story however I doubt I'll ever re-read it. Not because it was a bad story or anything like that...it just wasn't deep enough to hold my interest a second time around.
I love this book. L.A. Fiore was a random find for me, but not one I regret in the slightest.
I did read the first published version and I quite liked that, but I think the newly updated version is more developed.
5 stars all the way for me. From the descriptions to the dialogue to the characters themselves.
You won't regret losing time to this buy!
I absolutely loved this book from the first paragraph to the last! L.A. Fiore writes with such poignant flair that you feel as if you know these actual people, instead of reading about fictional characters in a novel!
The story is about Ember, who was raised by her single father, he'd never remarried after her mother was killed in an accident when she was just three years old.
After graduating from college, Ember moves in with Lena, her "best" friend since middle school, when she goes to New York City to pursue her dream job of becoming a writer. One night they go to Sapphire, a club, to meet a guy that Lena has a date with, and Ember being the third wheel sits at the bar while her friend is dancing the night away.
It's from this vantage point that she sees a man that instantly fascinates her and makes her wish she was the woman with him. Trace Montgomery. Little does she know her life as she knows it, has just changed forever!
You have to read this wonderfully written novel to find out the rest of the story, and believe me you don't want to miss it!!
I highly recommend this book if you like characters with depth and soul, trying to solve a mystery, enjoy romance, reading some mildly explicit sexual situations, and happily ever afters!!
Trace Montgomery is a walking enticement for women and they don't have any problem letting him know they are interested. He was the love them and leave them type and it made little difference to women. Ember Walsh was an introvert who preferred reading a good book at home to being bumped and stomped on in nightclubs. The two of them had nothing in common and yet, they did.
I'm flagging this as a new genre of romance, I don't consider it a straight romance or Young Adult; I think of it as a Change of Life Romance, although that doesn't really cover it. These two people are hurt, wary and definitely not really interested in making an effort to work it all out. I can't describe it any better than that. The series is a great read; the story is long enough to really get involved with the characters and their feelings. I really enjoyed this book and the other two in the series. I have read more by this author and I haven't been disappointed.
